Cape Pakarang Boat Shed

Today, for the first time since our arrival in Khao Lak, Alexis and I worked at the same site. The boat yard at Cape Pakarang is a project that was started to help provide fishing boats to the Thai fishermen who lost their boats during the tsunami. The initial plan is to built about 50 boats. In total, they cost about $4500 each. All of the money to build them comes from donations to the boat yard. In return, the people who gave money get a logo of their choice on a designated boat. Recently, a boat built from donations from Prince Andrew was completed, and it now sports a Royal Thames Yacht Club logo.

Alexis worked with Scott, the project manager at the boat yard, to design and paint a logo today. The money for the boat was donated by Scott’s father, and the boat is dedicated to his dog that just died. The logo isn’t finished yet, so we’ll hold off on posting a picture of it until it is done.

I spent the day shoveling gravel, doing plumbing, and pouring concrete for the foundation for a bathroom that will adjoin the boat shed. While Alexis reports that using the nearby beach is a beautiful alternative to an enclosed bathroom, I’m certain that the women who work at the boat shed will appreciate the new bathroom.

We’ll try to post more frequent updates. For the time being, there are some pictures here for you to see, so you can know that we’re happy and healthy! If any of you would like to donate money for a boat, we can help you get the money to the appropriate people and will ensure that your logo goes on the side!

p.s. I made it into syndicated news: go to World Picture News, click on The Lounge, the click on Week in Pictures, and then search for Heaton. I am not the fat lady. I am not related to the fat lady.

  2. Great pics, as ever. Clay could be a presidential candidate with that hair in the Koh Phi Phi shot. (Don’t believe the HEIGHT). Some kinda jackfruit-derived styling product in use there?

  3. Heh. Impressive ‘fro, huh? That’s two days of chlorine and salt water combined with the need for a haircut and the released toxins from the yoga-like Thai massage that I received a day earlier. The wind helps, too.

Strive to reach that height. You’ll be surprised how it makes you feel!
